Stand Up Paddleboarding on South Padre Island
Ever wish you knew how to surf, but you never wanted to struggle in the waves learning how to stand up on the surfboard? Stand Up Paddleboarding may be your answer to having a fun time while surfing.
Stand Up Paddleboarding, or SUP for short, is a sport where you stand on an oversized surfboard with a paddle and cruise flat water in style. The boards which usually exceed 11 feet in length provide a lot of float and allow anyone with a little bit of balance to get right up.
Most people learn to stand up paddleboard in the Laguna Madre Bay, because the calm shallow water makes it easier. Lessons cover balancing on the board, paddling techniques, foot placement, turning and more. Once you’ve got the basics, you are free to paddle around the bay for hours, getting a unique view from higher above the water than you get achieve from a kayak.
For those who already know they can do it, there are several places to rent stand up paddleboards on South Padre Island. You can choose to rent SUPs on the bay side of the island, or in the Gulf of Mexico, which requires additional balance to deal with paddling in the waves. Some more advanced paddleboarders can even catch and ride the waves!
Stop by South Padre Island to learn how to, or rent SUPs, as it is a fantastic island location to do the activity.
